about
“I wrote ‘Hey Kid’ and the other three songs on the forthcoming EP after the last presidential election. Around that time, I found an old college ID card from the 80s and couldn’t believe the strong and innocent energy beaming from my face! I had been feeling beaten down after the election. Seeing that photo, marching with the young and old against the current administration, inspired this song as a call to bring together youthful exuberance and resilience with the depth of maturity and experience. The music and lyrics poured out!”
Around the same time, the Hoboken music community lost a one of a kind musician & friend, Jim "The Reverend" Dillman, who was known for his salutation "Hey Kid." i knew something about my lyrics sounded familiar. There was a voice in my head and I think it was "The Rev" telling me "Hey Kid, write the song!"
About a year later, after the Stoneman Douglas school shooting, President Obama summed up what this song is about in the following quote.
"Young people have helped lead all our great movements. How inspiring to see it again in so many smart, fearless students standing up for their right to be safe; marching and organizing to remake the world as it should be. We've been waiting for you. And we've got your backs."

Hey Kid
words & music by Karyn Kuhl
Hey kid I need your guts
Hey kid I need your innocence
I didn't think I’d have to ask you again for anything
I need you kid I didn’t think I did
Thought you were long gone
Now you need me more than you ever did before
All along I’ve been watching just waiting outside your door
You need me kid you didn’t think you did
But you were so wrong
I watched us die I’ll watch us rise
From the miracle in the sin
Come together from within
I hope I live to see the day we’re saved by our love
I hope I live to see the day we’re saved
Hey Kid 4x
Hey Kid I need your guts
Hey kid I need your innocence
I didn’t think I’d have to ask you again for anything
I need you kid I didn’t think I did
Thought you were long gone
Now you need me more than you ever did before
All along I’ve been watching just waiting outside your door
You need me kid you didn’t think you did
But you were so wrong
You need me kid and I”ll be here from now on
Hey Kid-4x
